Before you begin oiling your soapstone saturate a soft clean lint-free cloth microfiber towel or sponge with a mild soapy water solution and use it to go over the entire surface. Vacuum the countertop to remove any dust or dirt. Then wring out your cloth re-wet it with clean.

Any common household cleaner can be used to clean soapstone counter surfaces. Wipe off any access with paper towel. On countertops we recommend a 150 grit sandpaper for the finish and on flooring we recommend 80 grit sandpaper. Because soapstone is softer than say granite it is possible to scratch the surface or nick an edge.
